HFO 1234yf: The ideal low greenhouse effect refrigerant for car conditioning and chillers

HFO 1234yf was developed in the Research Center of Buffalo (USA) by Honeywell Fluorochemicals and replaces HFC R134a in car air conditioning. Its thermodynamic characteristics make it extremely similar to R134a, both in terms of performance, energy efficiency and operating pressures. By using HFO 1234yf, car manufacturers have been able to easily adapt systems running on R134a, obtaining similar and in some cases better results.

Even in comparison with Carbon Dioxide (CO2), HFO 1234yf can boast a better energy efficiency and a lower contribution to the total greenhouse effect (Direct Effect + Indirect Effect).

Its limited Direct Greenhouse Effect (GWP < 1 kg CO2) makes HFO 1234yf the best possible solution in terms of environmental impact. Together with its energy efficiency, HFO1234yf is the best solution in car conditioning; HFO 1234yf belongs to the 4th Generation of refrigerant fluids called HFO (hydrofluoro-olefins), which guarantee a very low GWP value and maintain the necessary application properties and the high performance of HFCs unaltered.

HFO 1234yf has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) <1, therefore considerably lower than R 134a (GWP=1430); its persistence in the atmosphere (Atmospheric Lifetime) is about 400 times lower.

Thanks to its high environmental properties, the new HFO 1234yf refrigerant complies with the F-GAS REGULATION N° CE 842-2006, which requires car manufacturers to use – from 1 January 2017 – a refrigerant fluid with a GWP value lower than 150 .

The product is considered mildly flammable by ASHRAE (class A2L); however, numerous tests have shown that the fluid vapors are not ignited under the normal conditions in which a vehicle operates.
